FMCA membership number: F8052D (joined FMCA in 1999)
Type of pet: Cat
Breed: humane society special breed, perhaps
Name, age: Smokey, 15
How often does your pet accompany you on motorhome trips?
All the time — which is at least once a month. He has attended many FMCA rallies.
What do you like best about motorhoming with your pet?
Having him nearby to love on and not having to arrange for a “cat sitter” or kennel.
Was it easy for your pet to adapt to motorhome travel?
Yes. He seems relaxed and happy as soon as his food is out! He loved the new leather when we got our new 2000 motorhome. Now he has no front claws!
Smokey hates to travel in cars. He cries all the way and has to be sedated. But in the motorhome he just curls up and goes t sleep in his cage, a happy camper.
Is there anything that you and your pet have to do or overcome to make motorhoming more enjoyable?
Smokey gets baths about every week or two. He complains but tolerates it, but baths are part of the bargain of having a cat when Bill is allergic.
Does your pet have a favorite spot in the motorhome?
At night, our bed. During the day, everywhere.
What is your pet's favorite toy?
A toy mouse on a string. A bird video.
Have you modified your motorhome to accommodate your pet?
We use the boot storage area in the closet for kitty litter. Smokey travels in his travel cage (which folds) and the cage is strapped (using a seat belt) to the J lounger.
What is your favorite activity to do with your pet while traveling?
We take him for walks on a leash — when he feels like it.
Tips or advice for other motorhomers who travel with pets or are considering traveling with pets:
Many animals (cats and dogs) are killed when a car or motorhome is involved in a crash. Many times the animal escapes only to be hit by another vehicle.
Smokey is a very social and friendly cat. He likes people and large dogs (but not loud, yippy dogs).
He was named Atlanta’s most talented cat by radio station WPCH in the early ‘90s when the play “Cats” came to town. He won all sorts of goodies.
