The Arkansas Travelers chapter was formed in July 1973. We are part of FMCA's South Central Area and have approximately 43 member families from four states: Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, and Missouri.
A little-known fact is that back in the early days of our group, Six-State area rallies were hosted by individual chapters. The Arkansas Travelers actually put on two such rallies. Of course, today we hold our own chapter rallies. They typically take place on the second week of April, May, June, September, October, and November. Many chapter members like to do their traveling in the summertime, so we get together in the spring and fall.
Rallies are held in various spots throughout the four states. Since most of our members are retired, we have a Tuesday-through-Thursday schedule. We endeavor to have a fun outing each time. We share potluck dinners and have at least one meal catered or visit a local restaurant. We play cards and dominoes. The ladies of the chapter also have a craft project at each rally; at our fall rally in Hot Springs, Arkansas, we made a beaded night-light cover. Also, one of our members held a seminar on RV maintenance that was very well attended and informative.
The last rally of 2009 took place November 30 through December 3 at the Hot Springs National Park KOA. Our hosts had planned an outstanding event. The first evening, one of our members, Richard Knoll, a professional magician, entertained us with an audience-participation magic show. The second evening, a musical duet performed a show of country, contemporary, and Christmas music. The highlight of the rally was a trip to Garvan Woodland Gardens to observe more than a million lights in various displays.
The Arkansas Travelers had decided to make a donation of teddy bears to the North Little Rock Police Department for children who have, through no fault of their own, been placed in a traumatic situation. Each of our members donated one or more stuffed animals; in all, we gave more than 40 bears. While we were at the KOA, the park's owners added 10 more bears to our total.
We are a laid-back group who have a good time and enjoy getting to know each other. We would love to have you visit a rally. We will be in Natchez, Mississippi, in April; Carthage, Missouri, in June; and Texarkana, Texas, in September, in addition to three rallies we will hold in Arkansas.
