Members of the Ozark Ridge Runners enjoy living in one of the most beautiful areas of the United States — the Ozark Highlands. The area abounds in scenic vistas and lakes, camping opportunities, metropolitan and entertainment venues, and some of the friendliest people in the world. What more could an FMCA chapter want for local rallying locations?
The Ozark Ridge Runners chapter was chartered in November 2001, and membership generally consists of residents of Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. Some members are area natives, and others came here as retirees seeking an active lifestyle. We meet six times annually, preferring campgrounds with a clubhouse to use for visiting, games, occasional speakers, and meals.
A favorite chapter activity is touring manufacturing facilities. We have learned about aircraft manufacturing, mushroom growing, motorcycle making, and consumer packaging. The list goes on and on. We always leave these tours impressed with the productivity of the United States. Who would have thought a trip to the supermarket would provide glowing memories of a rally event? Packing cartons can be a masterpiece in design and efficiency.
While the men enjoy tech talks and road stories, the women learn a new craft or go shopping. A past rally at Canton, Texas, Market Days produced a bonanza of fun and shopping opportunities. Another rally is planned there in 2011.
Rolling rallies are getting more popular with our group. The concept was introduced with a trip that included St. Louis and Hannibal, Missouri, and Nauvoo, Illinois. Then in May 2010 we took a 10-day trek that began with a stop at a campground along the Mississippi River to enjoy food, gaming, and blues in Memphis, Tennessee; next, we rolled on for a weekend country music fix in Nashville, Tennessee. The following week found us restfully cruising the scenic Natchez Trace, headed for Tupelo, Mississippi, and Elvis memories. Before heading back, we drove to Red Bay, Alabama, to tour the Tiffin Motorhomes manufacturing facility. In March 2011, a rolling rally is planned to enjoy rural Mardi Gras in southern Louisiana.
Some of us will be attending the South Central Area Rally in Shreveport, Louisiana, September 29 through October 3. We look forward to seeing you at our booth. Our next rally will be in Grove, Oklahoma, October 28 to 30. Our annual Christmas party will be held December 3 at a restaurant in Harrison, Arkansas, with a lively “hillbilly gift exchange."
