Chapter Spotlight

Most of us own rolling homes made from buses that had a previous life carrying passengers, such as long-distance carriers or city transits. Some of us own bus conversions based on shells made for motorhome use. We represent many different manufacturers, and some of us own coaches made from very rare buses. They range in length from short to long, but most are 35 or 40 feet.

The GLCC chapter was formed in August 2002 with approximately 35 member families; now, we have more than 90 families on our roster. Chapter members live in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, and Ontario, Canada; a few are from Kentucky, Illinois, and Wisconsin. All members either own a converted coach or are interested in converted coaches. Our saying is that to be a chapter member, you must own a bus conversion or be a "wannabe."

In Arcadia, Florida, around the first of January, several GLCC members traditionally attend a rally called "Bussin'," which is open to anyone with a bus conversion or an interest in buses. The rally has many bus-related seminars and is hosted by bus aficionados Jack and Paula Conrad, F72092. There usually are more than 125 motor coaches from throughout the United States at this event, with bus parts for sale, and bus discussions and viewings going on continuously. We discuss conversions, generators, transmissions, engines, and everything in between.

Because of the weather in the Great Lakes area, our chapter's own rally season begins in April, when we enjoy the Shepherd Maple Syrup festival in Shepherd, Michigan. We hold a rally each month thereafter through the summer, up until September or October. We have met in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Ontario, and most rallies are close to local festivals or happenings. Most breakfast and dinner meals are provided by the rally hosts, although we sometimes go out for dinner.

Our chapter members also volunteer at the Great Lakes Area Rally and at FMCA international conventions at which we have members present.

Our chapter newsletter, published about 10 times a year, provides rally reports and other news of interest — even lists of available conversion parts or buses for sale. Upcoming rallies are always listed, too.

Chapter membership dues are $30 per coach the first year, which includes name badges, and $15 per year after that. If you host a rally, your next year's chapter dues are paid. For additional information, contact FMCA's Chapter Services Department at (513) 474-3622 or (800) 543-3622;
