This September the Roamin' Rigs chapter will start a new rally season, and if you live near Tampa, Florida, you will want to get in on the fun. The chapter was chartered with FMCA 22 years ago, and members gather in spots in the Tampa Bay region.
From September through May, rallies take place usually on the fourth weekend of the month, unless a holiday or conflict interferes. Over the September 28-30 weekend the chapter will meet in Dunedin; October 26-28 they'll have a Halloween bash in Bushnell; and November 16-18 they will feast in Kissimmee. The chapter's New Year's Eve rally and party will be held at Lazydays in Seffner, December 30 through January 1. More rallies will be announced for 2013.
Chapter president Mary Ann Hartman, F322571, said the group's activities change a bit each year, to keep things fresh. The annual Halloween party may involve costumes and kids' games, plus pumpkin decorating. In addition, each year Mary Ann hosts an Italian feast, and laughter prevails at the annual white elephant auction, where members bid blindly on whatever happens to be hiding in a paper bag.
Chapter members also play cards and make crafts, and get busy with bocce ball, bean bag baseball, and more. The weekend rallies sometimes include "little side trips, and boat trips, and we go out to dinner all the time," Mary Ann added. "We've gone to flea markets and nature parks. We're a fun and lively group. We all enjoy a good meal; play games; and have some laughs," she said.
Like members in other FMCA chapters, the Roamin' Rigs RVers help each other in times of mechanical need. "Sure enough, between all the great minds and mechanics here, there's usually somebody who can fix it," Mary Ann said.
Close friendships have developed among chapter members, so that some couples head off to travel together, or even socialize in June, July, and August, when no rallies are scheduled. Mary Ann said they humorously refer to the summer group as "FARTS — Fellowship Among Riggers Traveling in Summer."
Attendance at Roamin' Rigs rallies typically runs anywhere from 13 to 24 coaches, and 27 families currently belong to the chapter. Most chapter members are residents of the Tampa area, but the chapter also accepts snowbirds. As Mary Ann said, "Fun people are welcomed!" Dues are $10 per coach.
