This group is centered in Alabama and gets together every other month.
The Deep South chapter was chartered in 1976 and is still going strong. At the present time we have 41 member families, plus three honorary members who were charter members.
We average around 20 coaches in attendance per rally. Our rallies are full of friends, fellowship, and fun as we meet to enjoy the adventures of motorhoming.
Deep South holds six rallies each year, in February, April, June, August, October, and December. We enjoy all the usual rally activities, such as card games, visiting local sites of interest, and eating great food. In conjunction with our rallies we have toured sites such as the Honda plant in Lincoln, Alabama, and the Blue Bell ice cream factory in Sylacauga, Alabama. We participated in the morning flag-raising ceremony at Whiting Field Naval Air Station in Milton, Florida — although some members didn’t make it to the reveille because we had to be at the field well before 7:00 a.m.
Over the years we have traveled to Perry, Georgia; Nashville, Tennessee; Renfro Valley, Kentucky; and even to Petit Jean State Park near Morrilton, Arkansas. After the rally in Petit Jean State Park, a number of us caravanned together to Branson, Missouri, to spend a few extra days and enjoy great entertainment. We traveled as a group to Brooksville, Florida, this past February to attend the Southeast Area Rally.
We have folks from many different walks of life, including a number of retired military who have elected to retire in the South. When our chapter started, members were from Alabama, but since then we have branched out to include a few members from other states, such as Florida, Ohio, and Arkansas. One full-timing couple call Virginia Beach, Virginia, their home, because that is where their grandchildren live.
Our rallies officially run from Friday evening until Sunday morning, but those of us who are retired like to get to the rally site on Wednesday or Thursday just to be together longer. We either go out to eat as a group or have a cookout together on those pre-rally days. When we don’t have planned activities, members always seem to find a few others who will join them in a card game or two. We rotate wagon master duties among the members on a volunteer basis, with help from volunteer co-wagon masters.
If you live in Alabama or surrounding states, we would love for you to visit with us. Chapter dues are $15 per coach per year, and we send out a newsletter after each rally to members and commercial members, along with the registration and information sheet for the next rally.
