A Trip to the Stitchin’ Post!

Set off for the picturesque town of Sisters, aptly named for the nearby mountains. This authentic western town is home to the Stitchin’ Post quilt and fabric shop, one of the best-known shops in the Pacific Northwest, as it hosts one of the largest quilt shows each summer. They will set up a “Make & Take” project for the group.  Although the project may change, the plan is to make a Central Oregon landscape design fabric postcard that actually can be sent in the mail or framed as a piece of art. If you are feeling lucky, you may even go home with a door prize! There will be time to browse and shop before we return to the fairgrounds.

Deschutes Brewery

Please Register for this tour by July 11, 2014.

The Pacific Northwest is well-known for its microbreweries, and Deschutes Brewery is one of the best.  The folks there will tell you there are four main ingredients involved in the creation of beer:  water, hops, malt, and yeast.  But they’ll also tell you a great brew only comes alive when consumed!  Your visit may include a guided tour of the brew house and cellars, and an opportunity to taste-test the beer.  Afterwards, enjoy a tasty selection of food at a private reception in their spectacular Mountain Room. Experience amazing views of the Cascade Mountains as you partake in a deli buffet of smoked turkey breast, pastrami, and tarragon chicken salad, a variety of sliced cheeses, house-baked breads, spring lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, and cherry peppers served with assorted condiments and house-made potato chips. Then it’s on to the Old Mill District where you can browse through charming galleries and top-quality shops for approximately an hour and a half before returning to the Family Reunion.

Newberry Monument and Lakes

Volcanic activity at Newberry National Volcanic Monument has created a spectacular molten landscape. Our team has mapped out all the “must-sees” and our professional tour guide will bring this tour to life with personal commentary and narration. The first stop is the Lava Lands Visitor Center, where a friendly ranger will begin our visit with a patio talk.  From there, you can choose to continue with the ranger as he/she leads us through a walk on the paved lava flow (the Trail of the Molten Lands) or pop inside and view the state-of-the-art interpretive exhibit about the area’s geologic and cultural history and view a variety of films scheduled daily. The Trail of the Molten Lands is a paved pathway that loops across a lava flow that originated at Lava Butte approximately 7,000 years ago. One flow changed the course of the Deschutes River. The Big Obsidian Flow, created 1,300 years ago, is famous for its paths of black and grey volcanic glass covering 700 acres.  Astronauts came to this area to train!  Next, it’s on to spectacular views as we travel to the shores of sparkling Paulina Lake and East Lake, two alpine lakes in the summit area of Newberry Volcano. Keep your cameras close at hand. This tour includes a box lunch.
