"A Peach Of A Town,"
Byron, Georgia As the
crow flies, you will head to Byron, Georgia, the home of the Peach
Festival held in June each year.
The first stop will be at the Welcome
Center, which at one time was the town drugstore. It was built in
1900. Here you could get your vertigo pills, buy an ice cream, and
pick up something for your mama's birthday.
Next, you will walk across the street to
the Old Train Depot and see a caboose. Photos of "Old Byron" line
the walls. In 1850, Byron was a flag stop on the Southwestern
Railroad and was known as "Number One and One-Half Station." Around
1920 the peach industry boomed with 30 to 40 cars of peaches being
shipped each day from Byron. This made the town one of the largest
peach growing and shipping centers in the South.
Members of Family Motor Coach
Association who have registered for this tour are invited to tour
two of Byron's most beautiful and historical homes. The Peavy Home,
was built in 1850 and is still occupied by Mrs. Peavy, a descendent
of the original owners. You also will go into the cook's kitchen,
located in the lower part of the grounds.
Down a long, tree-lined drive you will
find the Williams Slocumb place. The home was built around 1910 and
was the residence of U.S. Congressman Richard Ray. Mrs. Ray still
occupies the home. As your special gift, each couple will receive a
copy of her book about the house, signed and dated.
A plate lunch with a choice of one meat,
two vegetables, bread, and sweet tea, the table "wine" of the south,
is included on this tour.

Callaway
Gardens And The Little White House
A ride through Callaway Gardens is
something you will never forget. A step-on guide will escort you
through an exquisite exploration of the natural beauty that is
called Callaway Gardens. Sights include the Cecil B. Day Butterfly
Center, the largest free flight conservatory in North America; Mr.
Cason's vegetable garden, the Southern location for the PBS series,
"The Victory Garden"; and the beautiful Lakeside Chapel.
Travel with us to Warm Springs, Georgia,
to see why President Franklin D. Roosevelt came to his "Little White
House" to escape the pressures of Washington, D.C. Stricken with
polio, FDR sought the healing powers of the warm bubbling springs in
the area. Most of the house and furnishings look much like they did
when President Roosevelt left them in 1945.
Also included in the tour is a fabulous
lunch buffet at the Bulloch House, a restored antebellum mansion in
Pine Mountain.

Mr.
Bill's Grist Mill, Historic Yatesville, Georgia
Relive by-gone days at Mr. Bill's Grist
Mill. This mill was originally named Hightower Mill and the
foundation dates back to 1792. The Nelson family owned it since the
Civil War. Hard times forced the mill to close in the late 1940s.
Bill Browning purchased the property in 2003 and the restoration
process began. A stickler for authenticity, Mr. Bill wouldn't rest
until the original waterwheel was found and erected. His hands-on
experience is not to be missed. Watch as the mill is started by hand
and the corn fed into the grinding stone, then feel the meal as it
flows from the shoot, is sifted, and bagged. Included in this tour
is a fresh bag of cornmeal and grits to take with you. Make your
reservations quickly, for only 30 people can be accommodated on this
tour.

The
Antique Crawl, Y'all Revisit
the by-gone days on our antique crawl. Our first stop is Antiques
From The Shed. Owner Joe Gayle will entertain us with a story or two
about his "treasure-hunting skills" and also provide some good
information about how to tell the authenticity of certain types of
antiques. Our gracious hostess
right next door at Carrie Lynn antiques will be waiting to talk to
us about all the wonderful things in her shop.
We board the bus and head over to The
Perry Antique Mall, with more than 30 booths for you to buy trinkets
and treasures from your trip. Warm cider and homemade muffins await
you at our last stop before heading back to the FMCA convention
site.
