Recall Corner - June 2001

Jacobs Vehicle Systems has announced a recall (NHTSA recall 01E-008) relating to a defect in certain installations of Jacobs Driveline Brakes using the Jacobs solid-state controller. The company manufactured approximately 1,000 of the solid-state controllers in the 1990s.

A possible failure mode can cause a short from the positive terminal of the battery to the negative terminal of the battery within the controller. This may cause the controller to ignite without warning, causing damage to the controller and possibly to the vehicle.

The repair involves installing an in-line fuse in the circuit between the battery and the solid-state controller. Allow approximately two hours for the repair; however, more time may be required depending on service scheduling appointments.

Those affected by the recall should contact a repair facility to schedule a service appointment. Dealers have been instructed to order a Recall Retrofit Kit from Jacobs Vehicle Systems, and it may take a few days for the parts to come in.

The Jacobs Driveline Brake is an electromagnetic device located on the drive shaft of gas- or diesel-powered motorhomes. It should not be confused with the Jacobs Engine Brake, or "Jake Brake," or with Jacobs Exhaust Brake products, all of which are mounted exclusively to diesel engines.

For more information and for the locations of some repair facilities, visit www.jakebrake.com. If you have difficulty obtaining the repair, contact Jacobs Vehicle Systems customer assistance at (800) 269-6562, ext. 6998.

Monaco Coach Corporation has announced recall R000001 (NHTSA recall 00V331), which involves an incorrect tire pressure inflation label on 3,121 1999 and 2000 model-year Monaco Windsor and Holiday Rambler Endeavor motorhomes.

The affected coaches were manufactured between June 1998 and July 2000. Certain Windsor type As produced on Roadmaster chassis and Endeavor diesel type As built on Freightliner chassis do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 120, "Tire Selection and Rims for Motor Vehicles other than Passenger Cars." The federal certification label contains the incorrect tire pressure inflation information. Under- or overinflated tires can cause or contribute to premature tire failure.

Dealers will replace the certification label with a new label that contains the correct recommended tire inflation data.

Newmar Corporation has announced NHTSA recall 00V315, which involves replacing the fuel vent hose on 1,263 2000 and 2001 model-year Mountain Aire, Dutch Star, Kountry Star, London Aire, and Kountry Aire motorhomes made between January and August 2000.

The recall pertains to certain front- and rear-engine type A coaches built on Ford, Spartan, and Workhorse chassis. The front-engine coaches affected were built on Ford and Workhorse chassis between January 1 and August 31, 2000. The rear-engine coaches affected were built on Spartan chassis from February 23 through August 31, 2000. These vehicles do not comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 301, "Fuel System Integrity." An incorrect vent hose was installed on the fill nozzle to the fuel tank. The hose can prematurely deteriorate, allowing fuel leakage.
