Recall Corner - June 2001
Jacobs Vehicle Systems
has announced a recall (NHTSA recall 01E-008) relating to a defect
in certain installations of Jacobs Driveline Brakes using the Jacobs
solid-state controller. The company manufactured approximately 1,000
of the solid-state controllers in the 1990s.
A possible failure
mode can cause a short from the positive terminal of the battery to
the negative terminal of the battery within the controller. This may
cause the controller to ignite without warning, causing damage to
the controller and possibly to the vehicle.
The repair involves
installing an in-line fuse in the circuit between the battery and
the solid-state controller. Allow approximately two hours for the
repair; however, more time may be required depending on service
scheduling appointments.
Those affected by
the recall should contact a repair facility to schedule a service
appointment. Dealers have been instructed to order a Recall Retrofit
Kit from Jacobs Vehicle Systems, and it may take a few days for the
parts to come in.
The Jacobs Driveline Brake is an electromagnetic device located
on the drive shaft of gas- or diesel-powered motorhomes. It should
not be confused with the Jacobs Engine Brake, or "Jake Brake," or
with Jacobs Exhaust Brake products, all of which are mounted
exclusively to diesel engines.
