Recall Corner October 2006
Freightliner LLC has announced NHTSA
recall 05V551000, which affects some 2006-model-year chassis manufactured
between September 6, 2005, and October 20, 2005. The potential number of chassis
involved is approximately 560, some of which were used to build motorhomes.
On certain chassis with a front gross axle weight
rating (GAWR) of 12,000 pounds or higher, a forging defect in the top flange of
the front axle I-beam may result in a reduced service life. The axle I-beam may
fatigue and fracture, possibly leading to a loss of vehicle control and
subsequent crash without warning.
Freightliner dealers will inspect and, if
necessary, replace the front axle assembly. This recall is being conducted in
two phases: Phase I will replace the complete axle assembly on vehicles with a
GAWR that exceeds 12,000 pounds; Phase II will replace the axle I-beam and axle
spindles on chassis with a 12,000-pound GAWR. The inspection will take
approximately 30 minutes. If an axle replacement is required, the repair is
expected to take approximately eight hours once the replacement axle is
received. However, because of service scheduling and shipping times, the service
center may need the vehicle for a longer time period.

Freightliner at (800) 547-0712. The recall began on March 15, 2006, for Phase I.
Phase II began on August 10, 2006.
