In February and March 2012, FMCA members were invited to submit their ideas for an FMCA mascot.
FMCA’s art director tallied the 150-plus ideas that FMCA received and found that 47 unique character ideas were suggested.
Renderings of the three most-suggested characters — the turtle, the roadrunner and the goose — were displayed at FMCA.com and in FMC magazine. Members were invited to vote for their favorite.
Of the 3,500 votes received for the three final mascot characters, the turtle received more than 1,880 votes; this was approximately 400 more than the runner-up, the roadrunner.
Thus, Sheldon, FMCA's 50th anniversary mascot, was introduced during FMCA’s 87th International Family Reunion and Motorhome Showcase, Aug. 27 to 30, 2012, in Indianapolis, Ind.
All members who submitted mascot ideas were entered into a random drawing for a complimentary registration with full hookups at the Indianapolis Reunion. Al Roeske, F24288, was announced as the winner of that drawing.
To everyone who participated in FMCA’s mascot search by voting or submitting ideas, thank you. Look for Sheldon to be coming out of his shell a great deal as FMCA celebrates its golden anniversary.
