Satellite Internet inquiries

Dear FMCA Computer Geeks:

We are subcontractors/first responders with the power companies. We are part of a logistics team and must have good communications. We are the power companies’ catering company and travel most the Gulf Coast and Atlantic, mostly Florida to Texas. We travel in a 42-foot Monaco Dynasty (2004 with a 400-horsepower Cummins engine) and pull heavy equipment. Our motorhome pulls a 20- foot, 9,000-pound trailer and we have a refer truck as well that pulls trailers/mobile kitchens.

We need a satellite because where we go, at least when we go, communication towers are normally down. What do you recommend?

Tip Pace, Catering Connection

Tip,

Satellite is definitely the way to go for your situation. I would probably recommend redundant systems. Perhaps a MotoSat XF-3 1.2-meter dish with iDirect service. You might back that up with a second dish with Hughes or iDirect on one of the other vehicles. This would allow ultimate flexibility and include VOIP, VPN and availability of static IPs.

You will also want to create a local network to allow your responders to share the broadband connection wirelessly and securely wherever you are.

If you would like, I can put you in contact with an excellent company who can facilitate the complete install and provide service and support.

Internet via satellite

Dear FMCA Computer Geeks:

I have a couple of questions.

What is a ballpark figure for monthly service using a satellite connection?

I've heard that a satellite connection is slow. How does its speed compare to a DSL connection?

Thanks.

Julyna Landa

Julyna,

Standard business Internet satellite service from MotoSat is $79.99 per month. Residential service is $59.99 per month from Hughes. Speeds are generally around 1 MB for downloading and 200 KB for uploading.

DSL has several speeds depending on location. Typical DSL is 1.5 MB for downloading and 500 to 700 KB for uploading.
