Dear FMCA Computer Geeks:
I use AVG free Internet antivirus program. Recently they offered a Blue Registry to clean up your computer and speed up its performance. Do I really need this? I have not used it yet until I feel safe about it.
I am not familiar with "Blue Registry" and could not find any reference to it on the Official AVG forum. So, I am immediately suspicious of it.
The registry is a large database of information the computer keeps to identify hardware, programs and users on the system. It is not something most people want to mess with.
There are programs that can scan the registry and get rid of unwanted or un-needed entries. This can speed up the system, but they also can trash the system.
There are also a lot of scams that say they will scan your registry for free. Then they report hundreds of problems and offer to clean them for $39 or something like that. Don't do it!
Unless you are having serious performance issues, or are a real Geek, I would stay away from registry cleaners. There are some good, free registry scanners. Find them at www.download.com.
As always, make sure you have a reliable backup of your files before attempting any repairs.
