Telephone calls
If you are calling a legislator, ask to speak to
the aide who works on the issues of your concern. If that person is
not available, leave a clear message with your name, address and
phone number. State the reason for your call and what you want your
legislator to do. Ask for a written response to your
message.
- A phone call can quickly verify your
legislator’s position.
- Identify the piece of legislation you are
calling about and state your position in a concise and factual
manner.
- Listen as well as speak.
- Offer to send additional information supporting your position.
- As a vote approaches on a controversial issue,
most legislators are interested in constituent’s positions and
less likely to discuss the pros and cons of the legislation.
