In Michigan, May is the month that brings green grass and blooming tulips. It's also the month when Roving Wolverines chapter members begin their rally season.
The 10-year-old group's first campout of 2010 will be held May 21 through 23 at Duck Creek RV Resort in Muskegon, Michigan. From there, several chapter members will head south and join up with other FMCA members at the Great Lakes Area Rally (G.L.A.S.S.) in Berrien Springs, Michigan. As they do every year, they will work together as parking volunteers. "We will be going probably on the Sunday prior, to set up," said chapter president David Flickinger. "We park as a group there."
You do not have to live in the area to join the chapter, but most members do. "If you took Grand Rapids or Muskegon (Michigan) and made them the center of a circle with a 50- to 100-mile radius, you'd pick up almost all of us," David noted.
Approximately 50 member families belong to this friendly group of mostly retired motorhome owners. In addition to attending the G.L.A.S.S. Rally, they put together three of their own gatherings each year: the May spring rally, a summer rally (in July this year), and a fall rally (in September). Rallies are mainly within a two-hour driving time from the Grand Rapids/Muskegon area. This helps to accommodate those who are “still among the working” and want to come in on Friday, David said.
Rallies let everyone enjoy each other's company. "We are mostly just a group that gets together for a good time," David said. Socializing includes taking part in a variety of activities. The Roving Wolverines have visited popular Michigan attractions such as the town of Frankenmuth; gone on tours of factories and wineries; attended hot-air balloon events; and even taken dune buggy rides. Regarding the dune buggies, David chuckled and said, "The women drove, by gosh." Mexican Train, card games, and Hillbilly Golf also are a part of the rally fun.
In past years, the chapter also took a group caravan trip each summer. Organizers are taking a break for 2010, but the list of past caravan destinations is impressive. One year, a group drove from Michigan to the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Twice, they've traveled to Redmond, Oregon, to attend FMCA international conventions. They’ve traveled to the Northeast for a leaf-peeping tour and east to Gettysburg and Washington, D.C. A trek around Lake Superior and a drive south to Ohio Amish country also have been on the caravan list.
