The Verde Canyon Railroad leads through a high-walled canyon.Taking a scenic drive to search for leafy color is an autumn tradition for many motorhome travelers. Those who would like to take a break from driving can climb aboard for Verde Canyon Railroad’s Fall Colors Tour in Clarkdale, Ariz. Then, sit back, relax and enjoy the splendor of the season.

Each vintage car of Verde Canyon Railroad is outfitted for comfort. And unobstructed panoramic windows and prompt beverage service means passengers never have to budge to experience an amazing journey.

Budging, however, might prove irresistible. Between the excessive spread of appetizers served in first class and instant access to the open-air viewing cars, this is the something-for-everybody trip that families often seek.

Passengers on the Verde Canyon Railroad can ride in first-class comfort.Four-hour rail tour

The tour takes passengers on a four-hour rail journey from Clarkdale to the Perkinsville ghost ranch and back. The route leads through a high-walled canyon painted in an array of vibrant autumn hues that shimmer and change around every curve in the track.

October and November bring crisp nights followed by warm, sunny days beneath a sky achingly and endlessly blue.

Passengers will travel near ancient Indian ruins, over fortified trestles, past a monocline fault and through a manmade 680-foot tunnel.

Passengers enjoy the open-air view from the caboose on the Verde Canyon Railroad.Be sure to keep a sharp eye peeled for wildlife. Sightings of deer, coyote and other species increase this time of year, and migratory birds return to the sanctuary. It may be due to cooling temperatures, or maybe the critters just don’t want to miss all the dazzling autumn scenery.

Ales on Rails

Hues of amber and gold are not only found among autumn leaves but also flowing from a tap as the Verde Canyon Railroad celebrates Ales on Rails every Saturday and Sunday during October. In a tribute to Oktoberfest, the best Southwestern breweries serve up their handcrafted beers at the depot prior to departure and onboard the train during the excursion.

Accompanying the frosty microbrews at the depot are traditional Oktoberfest favorites such as brats, pretzels and strudels, as well as lively music.
