Signed up for FMCA Tech Connect+ and taking advantage of the Sprint Unlimited Hotspot Plan

I would say I started with Hotspot Authorization at 11:30AM, it is now 8PM and my Hotspot Battery is at 32%.

I am very pleased with both the Franklin R-910 Hotspot and the Sprint unlimited data plan. Everything is working flawlessly. I am in a rural area, 30 miles from the nearest city (Buffalo, NY) and I have had enough signal strength to do everything I wanted to do on my computers & tablets and ereaders, fast & flawlessly.

I found the Hotspot intuitive to use and easy to operate. I even liked the way it felt with its rubber armour coating! After 8-1/2 hours of continuous running, the Hotspot feels cool to the touch all over. If I had to tell one Hotspot fault, it would be the display screen font type is very small, making it hard to read.

Tomorrow I will play around with more of my WiFi capable devices and let you know what I think. The unlimited data plan is just great to have! No more running to public hotspots for me like when my old data plan was getting near its limit. I am in Computer Nerd Heaven!

Data cards for different providers

If you have your home phone with Sprint, your DSL with another, and you would like to use an AT&T or Verizon data card, can you do this?

Also, are any of these cards "On Demand," so to speak? Can you turn them on and off as needed?

Phil Kuhn

Phil,

Theoretically, you can have data cards from all the providers, but it just costs big bucks! You will get bills from everyone.

So, your task is to determine what the best plan is for where you are and where you want to be. For most travelers, that is Verizon.

If you have a qualifying phone and voice plan, you may be able to tether the phone to the computer for broadband Internet. Tethering allows you to turn the Internet feature on and off as needed.

Data cards are a separate contract. There are some "pay as you go" daily plans, but they are pretty high priced. Here is a link to an article about tethered cell Internet:

Stronger cell signal for Internet

I'm trying to find out if there is any way to increase or strengthen the cellular Internet signal in the area we are camping in. We can't seem to stay online for any length of time before we are kicked off.

If there is an amplifier or signal enhancer I could use, I would certainly look into it. We currently have verizon broadband service, which works well most everywhere else but our campground. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.
Dennis

Dennis,

Yes, there are several ways to get better connectivity with cellular devices. The best way will depend on your device and, of course, your wallet.

Cellular is two-way radio. A better antenna will provide better connection. Wilson makes the best cellular antennas. They also make great amplifiers. In some cases, an external antenna is all that is needed.

For best connectivity, an antenna and amp is what you want. Our friends at the 3G Store (www.3GStore.com) are experts and have good prices. Give them a call at (866) 347-8673. Tell them what you have and what you want to do, and they will give you all your options.
