“The first night we showed up for a rally we didn’t know anybody,” Chapter vice president John Kilburn said, referring to himself and his wife, Diann. “We came in there total strangers, but they jumped up to greet us and made us feel right at home.”

The High Plains Drifters’ scope is generally southeast Wyoming, northeast Colorado, and the panhandle of Nebraska. But all FMCA members are welcome. From April through October, the chapter meets on the fourth weekend of the month, from Friday through Sunday.

Friday typically includes a potluck, and Saturday morning the group gathers for a chapter business meeting. After that, John said, “Somebody might have a roundtable-type discussion for the guys to talk about issues with motorhomes every now and then. Most Saturdays you’re on your own for lunch, and then Saturday night we have a dinner that’s catered or put on by the hosts.”

Socializing and playing table games also are popular activities at rallies. And, over its 20-year history, the chapter has enjoyed some memorable outings. They have toured a yarn factory; gone to air shows; attended a dinner theater; and visited a train museum, artist studios, historical sites, a wood-pellet factory, and even a foundry that fabricates parts for out-of-production locomotives and train cars. Not every rally includes an outing, but rally planners do keep the possibilities in mind.

This group also has its share of members who can help new motorhome owners. “You learn so much,” John said. “It’s a great excuse to use your motorhome, and these people all have knowledge. If you have a problem, they’ve probably already had it.”

So, consider getting to know this group. After the April Fort Collins rally, other 2014 rallies are planned to take place in Cheyenne and Lingle, Wyoming, and in Akron, Loveland, and Penrose, Colorado. For more details, check FMCA’s Association Calendar in FMC magazine or online at FMCA.com.
